Global Poverty Eradication Contribution

In September 2007, the Korean government introduced an air-ticket solidarity levy titled "Global Poverty Eradication Contribution," a measure through which 1,000 KRW (US$0.89) is collected from each international flight passenger departing Korea in order to provide financial support to eradicate poverty and disease in the world's least developed countries

1. To reduce morbidity and mortality caused by epidemic meningitis in Niger.

2. To build capacity in disease surveillance and response against epidemic meningitis.

Niger Story

Niger is an arid country in western Africa, with over 80 percent of its land is covered by the Sahara Desert. It borders Algeria and Libya to the north, Chad to the east, Nigeria and Benin to the south, and Burkina Faso and Mali to the west. Although Niger has the fifth largest uranium reserves in the world, it is still a developing country persistently ranking as one of the lowest on the United Nation's Human Development Index (HDI). The vaccine donation ceremony that was held in June 2010 in the Nigerien district of Niamey was broadcasted in the Nigerien News. Following the campaign slogan of "Strengthening Epidemiologic Surveillance and Response against Meningitis in Niger" a ceremony was held for the vaccines donated by the project.
Many reporters from the Nigerien broadcasting station came to cover the event, and speeches given by Pr Nouhou Hassan, the Minister of the Department of Health and Mr. Chung Hyun Oh from the Korea International Cooperation Agency have been streamed on air.
